1 God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, (Psalm 46: 1-2)
Right out of the gate, the psalmist says, “God is our refuge and strength—an ever-present help in trouble.”
Think back when Jesus’ disciples feared for their lives in the midst of trouble. One evening Jesus and his disciples went by boat to the other side of a huge lake. Fear took the disciples over as a terrible windstorm arose. “Jesus rebuked the wind and the sea and said ‘Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?’ And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, ‘Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him”’ (See Mark 4: 35-41).
God had not abandoned them—God will not abandon us—He is in the storm with us and will calm the sea at just the right time—He is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble!
